Research Suggests to Freeze Eggs before 35


According to a report by UK’s independent fertility regulator, the eggs before the age of 35 years will serve to provide better result during IVF treatment of the frozen eggs.

Most of the cancer patients freeze their eggs before undergoing chemotherapy. IVF treatments are generally used with fresh eggs. Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) referred the data from UK fertility clinics from 2010 to 2016, and concluded that the major factor triggering successful pregnancies is the age at which women freeze their eggs.

“The report hints at an emergent technology which is a boon for those who are undergoing chemotherapy,” said Alastair Sutcliffe, a professor of general paediatrics at University College London. “But it’s an invasive procedure and it’s not zero risk for the patient.”

According to HFEA, the chances for successful pregnancy increases after IVF, if women freeze their eggs when they are younger than 35. However the average age recorded by HFEA is 38 years at which women are freezing their eggs currently. The report remarks that “the likelihood of a pregnancy from these eggs would be very slim” after the age of 40 and recommends the women to freeze it before reaching 40.

The first baby born through IVF technology was in 1999, and since the time the number of egg-freezing cycles in the UK has steadily increased each year. In the year 2016, 156 babies were born from frozen eggs in the UK.

However, there were just 18% of successful cases of egg freezing in 2016, which is very low. The chances of successful birth increased to 30% when the frozen eggs came from a donor.

Simon Fishel, the founder of the Care Fertility Group, an independent IVF provider, said “egg-freezing technology in the right hands should be able to give success rates almost as good as conventional IVF.”

According to the present law of UK, it allows the women to store their eggs for a period of 10 years only. The technology is to become better with time and promises to provide better result in the near future.
